South High Alumni Association celebrates milestone at SLCC

Salt Lake Community College hosted a kick-off celebration this month for the South High Alumni Association to start a year of events commemorating the group’s 20th year of existence. Before it became SLCC’s South City Campus in Salt Lake City, the historic building at 1575 South State Street was known as South High School.

A celebration June 10 included dedicating a room in SLCC’s Center for Arts and Media in honor of the Alumni Association. The event also coincided with an exhibit of antique radios and electronics in the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Art Gallery at the Center.

SLCC Interim President Dr. Deneece Huftalin also recently signed an agreement that extends the partnership between the College and the Alumni Association for another five years. Half of the multi-purpose room (it can be divided in two for separate events) at the Center for Arts and Media is now named the South High Room.

“We are honored and thrilled that the College has continued to support our mission,” said Susan Hansen, the Association’s executive director and an administrative assistant for Development at SLCC. “We are very pleased that they value our partnership.”

Almost 20 years ago the College approached alumni with the idea of forming a partnership, which still includes a scholarship fund for descendants of South High graduates who are interested in
attending SLCC. Over the past 17 years the scholarship fund has benefitted about 600 students at SLCC for more than $500,000.

Hansen said invitations for events in the coming year are being sent to about 13,000 South High grads. For the Association’s 10th anniversary, almost 2,000 people showed up. Tuesday’s event will also feature guided tours of the new Center for Arts and Media. Events in the coming year for alumni include a golf tournament, choir concert and a car show, with more events being planned, Hansen said.
