SLCC athletics director receives national award

Salt Lake Community College Athletics Director Norma Carr was recently awarded the George E. Killian Award of Excellence by the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) national office staff. The award is given to “individuals dedicated to the organization’s ideals of volunteerism, achievement, service, leadership and excellence.”

In 1993 Carr was elected as the NJCAA Region 18 women’s assistant director.

“Her efforts over the past two decades have led to dramatic progress in both women’s and two-year collegiate athletics,” the NJCAA stated on its website. “In 22 years, Carr has served as chair of the Division I Softball Committee, co-chair of the Standards and Ethics Committee and as a member of the Championship Events Committee. Carr’s valued contributions have added improvements and consistency to the rankings and All-America selections in volleyball, women’s basketball and softball.”

In the 25 years Carr has been at SLCC, she has overseen the construction of multiple athletics facilities for the Bruins. She has helped guide the coaches and teams under her watch to numerous Scenic West Athletic Conference and Region 18 championships, including the 2009 NJCAA National Championship in men’s basketball.

Through the Title IX initiative, Carr was also a leader in bringing equality to women in athletics, especially those competing at the high school level. Since becoming Director of Athletics at SLCC in 1989, she has taken a struggling department that consisted of only two sports (men’s and women’s basketball) and built it into a successful and highly competitive five-sport program.
