New Instruction and Administration Building Redwood Changes Campus

One of the first things students and staff notice about Salt Lake Community College’s new Instruction and Administration Building (IAB) at its Taylorsville Redwood Campus is how much natural sunlight comes pouring through its generous offering of windows.

The College opened the facility in time for the 2013-2014 school year.

The halls in this new 136,000 square-foot building bear unique architectural features, like the smooth rounded corners throughout and accents of blue glass at classroom entrances.

Students are often plugged in and working among the warm wood terraces in the John Fritz Cultural Commons. Inside the Commons the College’s commitment to public art is on display in the bold piece by Volkan Alkanoglu Design called “Quill Motion,” which spans three stories. Nearby in the Commons people sometimes gaze thoughtfully into the faces of tribal masks in a one-of-a-kind display.

From the beginning of the project, there has been an interesting collection of people we’ve been designing for in this building,” said Jill Jones, principal architect for AJC Architects. “We knew that we had to come up with a design solution for an array of people – from top administrators to teachers and students.”

Students who take classes in the 40 classrooms are mixed with dozens of administrators and staff with offices in the new building. It is also host to the Student Writing and American Sign Language labs.

The building has changed the way students, faculty and staff interact with the
College on this campus,” said the College’s Public Relations Director, Joy Tlou. “It has modified and enhanced the teaching and learning experience.”

Enhancements like glass meeting rooms and quiet nooks for study and collaboration further illustrate this building’s ability to rise above a mere collection of rooms encased by brick and mortar. It is now an architectural beacon at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus and a source of pride for the entire College.

Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) proudly announces a partnership with the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation to modernize its Business Building and transform its School of Business.
