SLCC Volleyball Wins Region 18 Championship, Earns NJCAA National Tournament Berth


The SLCC Volleyball team will play for the National Championship after winning its first Region 18 Championship since the 2009 season. The Bruins will be in Casper, WY from Nov. 21-23 to battle for an NJCAA National Championship having recently completed a perfect 10-0 season in Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) play for the first time since 2007. 

As outright SWAC champions, SLCC entered Region 18 Tournament play as the No. 1 overall seed. The Bruins earned hosting rights for the postseason clash and eased past Snow College in a 3-0 win on Friday at Bruin Arena in the semifinal round. SLCC then picked up a 3-0 sweep of rival North Idaho College on Saturday in the Region 18 Championship Match.


SLCC Head Coach Sue Dulaney was named Region 18 Coach of the Year and freshman outside hitter Carol Grasso brought home Region 18 Player of the Year honors. Grasso was named a First Team All-Region 18 player and also earned Region 18 Tournament MVP and All-Tournament Team honors.

Bruin sophomore outside hitter Bailee Kendall was also a First Team All-Region 18 selection. Sophomore middle hitter Jillian Campbell earned Second Team All-Region 18 honors and teammates Baylie Henrie and Indigo Allen were each named All-Region 18 Honorable Mention players. Henrie joined Grasso in receiving Region 18 All-Tournament Team honors as well.

The Bruins will head into NJCAA Nationals with a 24-6 overall record, having won all 12 matchups with SWAC opponents counting the two victories over the weekend in Region 18 Tournament action. SLCC has finished in the Top 10 of the NJCAA Top 20 Polls in each of the last six seasons and currently ranks in at No. 7 in the nation. The Bruins have won seven consecutive matches with five of those wins coming in three set sweeps.

Bruin Men’s and Women’s Basketball Remain Unbeaten

The SLCC Men’s and Women’s Basketball programs are off to hot starts as they open their 2013-2014 campaigns. The Bruin Men’s team is currently ranked at No. 17 in the NJCAA Top 25 polls and has an overall record of 5-0 after defeating Western Wyoming Community College 93-82 on Saturday night at the Lifetime Activities Center (LAC).

Head Coach Todd Phillips and the Bruins will head to Twin Falls, ID this week to face Casper College at the CSI Tournament hosted by the College of Southern Idaho. The Bruins will square off with the Casper Thunderbirds on Friday, Nov. 15 at 3:30 p.m.

The SLCC Women’s team is also unbeaten at 5-0, having swept its weekend slate of three games at the annual SLCC Tournament at the LAC. SLCC defeated Pima College 63-58 on Thursday in the tournament opener and topped South Mountain Community College 88-70 on Friday night. The Bruins closed the weekend with a 68-63 victory over Northwest College on Saturday.

Next up for Head Coach Betsy Specketer and the Bruins is a non-conference matchup with Western Wyoming Community College on Monday, Nov. 18 at 5:30 p.m. in Rock Springs, WY.

SLCC's Undergraduate Annual Research Conference Registration Deadline
