Salt Lake Community College is the official Salt Lake City simulcast partner for the ‘Lean Startup Conference’ that will be held in San Francisco on December 3.  The live simulcast, featuring some of the biggest names in business, marketing and technology, will be broadcast free of charge on December 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Larry H. SLCC Dance Company is looking to add a few more members to the performing group for Spring semester, 2013. Auditions will be Friday, December 7, 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in W-230 at South City campus. Men and Women are welcome.  You must be able to stay for the entire audition. Dance experience is required.   No choreography is necessary.  To be a member of Dance Company, you must be a registered student at SLCC and, if you are chosen,  register for DNC.1800 (which meets M, W, F, 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. at South City Campus). The School of Health Sciences has implemented selective admissions criteria, which includes applicants completing a pre-admission test. This is administered in the Health Sciences Assessment Center, at the SLCC Jordan Campus, Health Sciences Center, Room 054. The Grand Theatre, located at 1575 South State Street, Salt Lake City, will hold auditions for Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman on Saturday, December 1, 2012. The auditions will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and will be held in the Annex, located at 1610 South 250 East, in the South-East corner of Salt Lake Community College's South City Campus. Students’ Original Designs Sold to Benefit American Cancer Society Salt Lake Community College Fashion Institute students are taking part in a benefit fashion show in support of the American Cancer Society. Clint Gardner, Student Writing Center Coordinator for Salt Lake Community College, has won the 2012 Ron Maxwell Award for Distinguished Leadership in Promoting the Collaborative Learning Practices of Peer Tutors in Writing. The award was presented at the 29th annual National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing (NCPTW) in Chicago. The award recognizes a professional within the NCPTW organization for dedication to and leadership in collaborative learning in writing centers, for aiding students in together taking on more responsibility for their learning, and, thus, for promoting the work of peer tutors. Its presentation also denotes extraordinary service to the evolution of the conference organization. Business owner Karen Palmer founded Diamond K in 1991 as an agricultural supply company. Diamond K initially began as a sole proprietorship; the company has grown significantly since its founding because of hard work and innovative product development. Rewarding career and technical training opportunities are possible with the School of Applied Technology (SAT) at Salt Lake Community College.  SAT is hosting an open house on November 28 to provide an overview of programs and facilities offered at the Meadowbrook Campus. The event is free and open to the public. Student Holiday Designs Part of ‘ZCMI’ Holiday Window Displays Salt Lake Community College Fashion Institute students have been selected to bring back a Utah holiday tradition with original window designs. Under the direction of instructor Matt Monson, the students produced candy designs that will be unveiled in the Main Street display windows at Macy’s City Creek Center location on November 15 at 6:00 p.m. With the theme of ‘The Heart of the Holidays’, the student creations are giant tree ornaments made from candies with a staggering array of colors and textures. Focusing on local holiday traditions, the displays will fill six windows, each 9 feet wide, 8 feet deep, and 12 feet high. In all, the new displays will feature more than 120 pounds of candy. Boyd Johnson is an instructor in the Construction Management and Sustainable Building department. He has been instrumental in SLCC students' success; his teaching prepares them for the National SkillsUSA competition and for careers using innovative techniques, as employed in the College's recent collaboration with Habitat for Humanity to build a new project home. Boyd's students in the College's building and construction program volunteered their time and expertise to help Habitat for Humanity build a home loaded with sustainable 'green' features in Park City. The completed home was recently Utah's third residential project to be awarded LEED Platinum Certification—the highest certification for energy efficiency and environmental design that single-family homes can receive. The Salt Lake Community College Women’s Basketball team begins its 2012-13 season ranked No. 14 by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll. The Bruins turned in an overall record of 18-13 last season, finishing with a 7-8 mark in the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC). The Bruins finished the 2011-12 year as Region 18 runner-up, defeating rival College of Southern Idaho and defending NJCAA National Champion North Idaho College during the tournament.
